How do I maintain painted antique furniture?

I have an antique wooden table that is carved and painted. Will paste wax take the paint off? It is dry and needs to be cleaned up, but I dont want to ruin it.

Thanks!

Lightly sand the tabletop to get rid of the dried paint,,, remember to sand in straight runs ….the lenght ways as the top could be slabs of timber,, if you go crossways you could scratch the timber if you go through the paint..that means more sanding, start with a course grit then finish with a fine grit. Just prior to painting, polish the surface by using the back of the sandpaper as if you were sanding. When your ready to paint get Antique White paint and in between coats lightly sand top, when dry, minimum 24hrs between coats. You will need at least 3 coats to do a real good job. Then sit back with a nice chilled wine and gloat on your good job.
